# Mastering Screenshots and Screen Recording on macOS Tahoe

macOS Tahoe comes with a powerful, built-in toolset for capturing your screen. You don't need third-party tools like "Snipping Tool" to get high-quality captures or recordings.

## The Master Command: Command + Shift + 5

In macOS Tahoe, pressing `Cmd + Shift + 5` opens the on-screen capture control bar. This is your command center. From here, you can:
*   Capture the entire screen.
*   Capture a selected window.
*   Capture a selected portion.
*   **Record** the entire screen (video).
*   **Record** a selected portion (video).

You can also change options like the save destination (Desktop, Documents, Clipboard) and whether to set a timer.

## Quick Shortcuts

For faster usage, memorize these shortcuts:

### 1. Capture Entire Screen

Cmd + Shift + 3
```
This instantly takes a picture of your whole screen and saves it to your Desktop.

### 2. Capture Selected Area
```text
Cmd + Shift + 4
```
Your cursor turns into a crosshair. Click and drag to select the area you want to capture. Release the mouse button to take the shot.

### 3. Capture Specific Window
```text
Cmd + Shift + 4, then Spacebar
```
After pressing `Cmd + Shift + 4`, press the `Spacebar`. Your cursor turns into a camera icon. Click on any open window (or menu) to capture *just* that element, complete with a nice drop shadow.

## Managing Screenshots

### Default Location
By default, screenshots are saved to your **Desktop** with the name "Screenshot [Date] at [Time].png".

### Floating Thumbnail
When you take a screenshot, a small thumbnail appears in the bottom right corner of your screen for a few seconds.
*   **Click it**: Opens the markup editor to draw, crop, or share immediately.
*   **Swipe it right**: Saves it immediately and dismisses the preview.
*   **Drag it**: You can drag this thumbnail directly into an email, document, or chat window without saving it to a file first.

## Screen Recording

To record a video of your screen:
1.  Press `Cmd + Shift + 5`.
2.  Select **Record Entire Screen** or **Record Selected Portion**.
3.  Click **Record**.
4.  To stop, click the **Stop** button in the menu bar at the top of the screen, or press `Cmd + Ctrl + Esc`.
