App Switching and Navigation Shortcuts
Mastering keyboard shortcuts for switching between apps and windows is the fastest way to navigate macOS Tahoe. Once you build the muscle memory, you will rarely need to reach for the mouse or trackpad to change context.
The App Switcher (Command + Tab)
The App Switcher allows you to cycle through all open applications.
Basic Usage
- Hold down the Command (⌘) key.
- Press Tab. You will see a row of icons representing your open apps.
- Keep holding Command and tap Tab repeatedly to move the selection from left to right.
- Release Command to switch to the selected app.
Reverse Direction
To move backwards (right to left) through the list:
- Hold Command + Shift, then press Tab.
- Alternatively, while holding Command, use the Left Arrow key.
Advanced App Switcher Actions
The App Switcher is more than just a navigation tool; it's a remote control for your apps. While the App Switcher is open (i.e., while you are still holding Command), you can perform actions on the highlighted app:
- Quit App (Q): Press Q to quit the selected application. This is a very fast way to close multiple apps.
- Hide App (H): Press H to hide the selected application's windows.
- Unhide: If you switch to a hidden app, it automatically unhides.
- Cancel (Esc): Press Esc or click anywhere outside the strip to cancel the switch and stay in your current app.
Drag and Drop
You can drag a file from Finder or your Desktop and drop it onto an icon in the App Switcher to open that file with that specific app.
Switching Windows (Command + Tilde)
A common point of confusion for new Mac users is that Command + Tab switches apps, not windows. If you have three Google Chrome windows open, Command + Tab treats them as one "Chrome" entry.
To switch between different windows of the same application:
- Press Command + Tilde (`).
- Note: The Tilde key is usually located above the Tab key, next to the number 1.
This shortcut cycles through the open windows of the current app only. It will not switch you to a different application.
