Mastering Trackpad Gestures on macOS Tahoe

The Multi-Touch trackpad on macOS is widely considered the industry standard. It supports a wide range of gestures that allow you to navigate your system fluidly, often faster than using keyboard shortcuts.

Customizing Gestures

You can toggle specific gestures on or off and adjust sensitivity in System Settings.

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Go to Trackpad.
  3. Explore the three tabs: Point & Click, Scroll & Zoom, and More Gestures.
    • Tip: Hover over any option to see a video demonstration of the gesture.

Essential Gestures

Point & Click

  • Tap to Click: Tap with one finger instead of pressing down hard.
  • Secondary Click (Right Click): Click or tap with two fingers.
  • Look Up: Tap with three fingers on a word to see its definition or on a link to preview the website.

Scroll & Zoom

  • Scroll: Slide two fingers up or down.
    • Natural Scrolling: By default, content moves in the direction of your fingers (like on a phone). Pushing up moves content down.
  • Zoom: Pinch with two fingers to zoom in or out (works in Photos, Maps, and Browsers).
  • Smart Zoom: Double-tap with two fingers to instantly zoom in on a block of text or an image.
  • Rotate: Move two fingers around each other to rotate photos.

These gestures are key to mastering macOS multitasking.

  • Swipe Between Pages: Swipe left or right with two fingers to go Back or Forward in Safari.
  • Swipe Between Full-Screen Apps: Swipe left or right with three (or four) fingers to move between your Desktops and full-screen applications.
  • Mission Control: Swipe up with three (or four) fingers to see all open windows and spaces.
  • App Exposé: Swipe down with three (or four) fingers to see all windows of the current app.

Desktop Management

  • Launchpad: Pinch your thumb and three fingers together to view all your apps.
  • Show Desktop: Spread your thumb and three fingers apart to scatter all windows and reveal your desktop files.

Force Touch

If you have a modern MacBook or Magic Trackpad, it supports "Force Touch" (pressing harder).

  • Rename: Force click a filename to rename it.
  • Preview: Force click a file icon to Quick Look it.
  • Fast Forward: In QuickTime, press harder on the fast-forward button to increase speed.
