Mastering Mission Control and Spaces on macOS Tahoe
Mission Control is one of the most powerful features in macOS for managing window clutter. It provides a bird's-eye view of all your open windows, full-screen apps, and virtual desktops (Spaces).
What is Mission Control?
When you activate Mission Control, all your open windows shrink and spread out so you can see them clearly. At the top of the screen, you see the "Spaces Bar," which lists your different desktops.
How to Activate It
- Trackpad: Swipe up with three (or four) fingers.
- Keyboard: Press the Mission Control key (F3) or Control + Up Arrow.
- Mouse: Double-tap with two fingers on a Magic Mouse.
Working with Spaces (Virtual Desktops)
Spaces allow you to create separate desktop environments for different tasks. For example, you can have one desktop for "Work" (Email, Slack) and another for "Creative" (Photoshop, Final Cut).
Creating a New Space
- Enter Mission Control.
- Move your mouse to the top right corner of the screen.
- Click the + (Plus) button that appears.
Switching Between Spaces
- Trackpad: Swipe left or right with three (or four) fingers.
- Keyboard: Press Control + Left/Right Arrow.
- Keyboard (Direct): Press Control + Number (e.g., Ctrl+1, Ctrl+2) to jump to a specific desktop (requires enabling in System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Mission Control).
Moving Windows Between Spaces
- Enter Mission Control.
- Drag a window from the center area up to one of the thumbnails in the Spaces Bar at the top.
- Pro Tip: You can also drag a window to the edge of the screen and hold it there for a second; macOS will slide you into the next space.
Assigning Apps to Spaces
If you want an app (like Spotify) to always open on Desktop 3:
- Go to Desktop 3.
- Open the app.
- Right-click the app's icon in the Dock.
- Select Options > This Desktop.
App Exposé
While Mission Control shows all windows, App Exposé shows only the windows for the current application.
- Trackpad: Swipe down with three (or four) fingers.
- Keyboard: Press Control + Down Arrow.
This is incredibly useful if you have 5 Word documents open and need to find a specific one without seeing your browser or other apps.
Hot Corners
You can trigger Mission Control just by moving your mouse to a corner of the screen.
- Open System Settings.
- Go to Desktop & Dock.
- Scroll to the bottom and click Hot Corners....
- Assign "Mission Control" to a corner (e.g., Top Left). Now, flicking your mouse to that corner instantly reveals your windows.
