Window Management in macOS Tahoe
macOS Tahoe offers powerful tools to organize your workspace, allowing you to multitask efficiently without getting lost in a sea of open windows.
Stage Manager
Stage Manager is a feature that automatically organizes your apps and windows, keeping your current task front and center while other apps are neatly arranged on the side.
Enabling Stage Manager
- Open Control Center (the toggle switches icon in the menu bar).
- Click Stage Manager to toggle it on.
How it Works
- Active App: The app you are working on appears in the center of the screen.
- Recent Apps: Other open apps are displayed as thumbnails in a vertical strip on the left.
- Switching: Click a thumbnail on the left to switch to that app. The previous app moves to the left strip.
- Grouping: Drag a thumbnail from the left onto the center window to create a workspace with multiple apps (e.g., a browser and a notes app).
Split View
Split View allows you to work in two apps side-by-side without distractions, filling the entire screen.
Entering Split View
- Hover your mouse pointer over the green full-screen button in the top-left corner of a window.
- Select Tile Window to Left of Screen or Tile Window to Right of Screen.
- The window will fill that half of the screen. On the other half, click the second app you want to use.
Adjusting and Exiting
- Resize: Drag the black vertical bar between the windows to adjust the split ratio.
- Exit: Move your cursor to the top of the screen to reveal the window buttons, then click the green button on either window.
Mission Control
Mission Control gives you a "bird's-eye view" of everything open on your Mac.
- Access: Swipe up with three fingers on your trackpad, or press the
F3key (often labeled with three rectangles). - Spaces: At the top of the Mission Control screen, you can create additional desktops (Spaces). Drag windows into these spaces to separate different workflows (e.g., "Work" vs. "Personal").
